Dr. Paul Archway
Prominent podiatrist, foot surgeon and teaching doctor at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals, he’s a scratch golfer and moves well in Madison’s political circles. As the story opens, he’s dealing with a small midlife crisis brought on by an alluring resident doctor who is flirting with him, his strong-willed wife who is reasserting her self-identity after 20 years of marriage and his high school aged daughter who is dating a college boy. Not to mention the new neighbors who are about to turn his world completely sideways.
Former model, doctor’s wife, mother and car buff, she has entered a midlife crisis of her own, struggling to define herself in terms that don’t include her husband or daughter. Using her persuasive charms and mechanical aptitude, she has become the top Lexus salesperson in the region in record time and is ready to take her independence to a new level.
High school junior, daughter of Paul and Marline, dating Martin, a freshman at UW. Georgia is a track star running cross-country in the fall when Feet First takes place. She has developed a foot injury common to runners, with which her father is obsessed. She senses the growing separation between her parents and desperately wants to hold them together until she graduates and can move out of the house. At the same time, she is dealing with her own sexual awakening and how to be in a relationship with an older boy when she’s not ready yet to get physical.
Shady real estate developer from Chicago who is putting together a dubious deal with the local Indian nation worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Problem is it hinges on the legality of a 180-year old piece of paper. He will cheat, lie, bribe and do anything to make sure his deal goes through. His marriage to Valerie seems to be one of co-dependence—he needs the reassurance of a trophy wife and she needs a way out of lesser financial conditions.
It’s hard to get past Valerie’s looks to appreciate her mind. That’s her curse—and her blessing. She is an enigma that we’re not quite sure of and neither are her husband or Paul, for that matter. She has channeled her foot sensuality into an impressive shoe collection and pedicure bills that drive Jack crazy but he never puts two and two together. Not until Paul takes her foot in his expert hands the first night they meet in his hot tub, does she realize the pleasure she’s been missing.
Judge Rabb is Paul Archway’s golf partner, political benefactor and patient. He’s also the linchpin of the entire story in that he has to make the most important and controversial ruling of his career. His character is full of surprises and keeps Paul and the rest of the characters guessing until the end.
Georgia Archway’s boyfriend and Paul Archway’s savior—more than once. Martin is a film major and carries a video camera with him wherever he goes, to shoot the action of his daily life. He also shoots the action of other people’s lives, which ends up helping put the right man in prison.
