In Feet First, Paul Archway considers Forward, the golden female statue that stands atop the State Capitol building and expresses his bewilderment not just about her but about all women:

“I used to look at that statue and wonder, ‘Why a woman?’” Paul said. “Aren’t men supposed to be the leaders, the pioneers, the ones who look to the future? The ones who bear all the burdens on their shoulders?” He lowered his voice and leaned over the table. “I don’t think that anymore.”
